Landeskunde des Generalgouvernements, 1943 Nazi book
After the speedy German Wehrmacht and Soviet victory in Poland in the fall of 1939, the country was divided into three zones: Polish land annexed by Nazi Germany in the west, Polish areas annexed by the Soviet Union in the east, and the Generalgouvernement in the center, headed by General Governor Dr. Hans Frank.

The territory was made up of the land area that became Poland after World War I, including parts of Ukraine, parts of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, and German Silesia. After the start of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, the German Generalgouvernement became a lot bigger as Russian occupied Poland, Galicia and additional parts of what is now Ukraine were added to it.

Material in this 1943 book, Landeskunde des Generalgouvernements (Regional Geographical Studies of the Generalgouvernement) was assembled by Dr. Theodor Müller for the Hauptabteilung Wissenschaft und Unterricht in der Regierung des Generalgouvernements, or the Main Office of Science and Education of the Government of the Generalgouvernement.

Chapters cover history from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, as well as Russian and other foreign influences through the ages all the way up to the September 1939 German invasion and victory in Poland. Details of the creation of the Generalgouvernement headed by Generalgouverneur Dr. Hans Frank, are included as well as population statistics divided by nationality and religion.

Geography and climate are explained, flora and fauna, architecture and building practices in different parts of the territory, population centers, the road network, economy and important industries, etc.

This rare 6-¾ x 9-½ inch, 136-page book is about the positive economic changes in the Generalgouvernement since thousands of German men and women from all parts of Adolf Hitler’s Greater German Reich flocked to the area in the former Poland after the fall of 1939. They followed the “Call of the East” to create Lebensraum or living space which Germany claimed they needed to accommodate its projected increase of population and to spread German customs, education and order (it was considered a National Socialist obligation to make sure the occupied German territories in the East would become just as 'German' as the Fatherland).

In his Foreword, Dr. Müller explained that this book was created to inform Germans about the land where their fellow Germans had decided to resettle and work for Germany’s future. Another goal of the book was to teach German youth about the history and geography of the neighboring land.
