Die Pause, 1941 NS-Kulturzeitschrift, Ing. Hanns Blaschke
Die Pause magazine was by far the largest and most prestigious photo feature magazine published in Greater Germany’s second largest city, Wien, by Vienna’s Vice-Mayor Ing. Hanns Blaschke (shown below).

Blaschke was an early member of the Austrian Nazi Party (when it was still illegal) and was a member of the SS. With the Anschluss, in September 1938 he became the head of the newly created Kulturamt der Stadt Wien (Culture Office of the City of Vienna) and on 30 December 1943 Reichsstatthalter Baldur von Schirach named him Mayor of Vienna.

The two rare 80+ year old Die Pause magazines we offer for sale on this USMBOOKS web page are the first two issues of Year 6 of publication, 1941. The 9-1/2 x 12 inch issues have a total of 200 heavily illustrated pages.

Chapters cover technical improvements, war movies and photographers, the role of movie directors, cultural films, trick photography, etc. The magazine contains many movie stills featuring famous German actors of the Third Reich era, as well as advertising for new films by Tobis and UfA, many full-page.
Die Pause issue number 3 of 1941 focusses on the German film industry with articles written by the President of the RKK Film Chamber Carl Froehlich, famous actor Emil Jannings, the leader of the Film Department at the Nazi Propaganda Ministry Dr. Fritz Hippler, and others.

The cover of the double issue 1 / 2 features the profile of a sculpture by Fritz Klimsch. The magazine has heavily illustrated articles about contemporary German architecture (accompanied by several architectural design drawings of enormous Nazi building plans), contemporary sculpture and paintings, interior design and tableware design, German theater all over Nazi Germany, and the work of 19th century Austrian author and playwright Franz Grillparzer.

These TWO fine issues of Die Pause also contain advertising for the best firms and products made and sold in Vienna. Advertisers include beer breweries, fashion and furniture shops, hotels, bars and cafes, banks, insurance companies, etc. They include advertisements for Nazi swastika flags and the extremely anti-Semitic Nazi book by Robert Körber called Rassesieg in Wien. The headline translates as “Yet again the Jews!”

These rare 1941 issues of Die Pause are in very good used condition. They are complete, have no writing and no odor. Issue 3 comes with an original unused period subscription payment form (shown below).
